Saint Croix Vacation Rentals Area Information
Saint Croix is an island located in the Caribbean Sea, which is part of Virgin Islands, US. The island lies about 7 miles of Charlotte Amalie which is the capital of Virgin Islands. This is the largest island in the Virgin Island cluster. This island has been ruled by 7 different country rulers, Spain, Britain, Netherlands, France, Malta, Denmark and United States. The island was bought by the Danish West India and Guinea Company in 1733. In the early 1700’s the main source of income was agriculture and had over 90 varieties of plantations such as sugar cane, tobacco, cotton.In 1917 the Island was sold to the US for an estimated value of 25 million US dollars. The reason behind the purchase was a army strategic movie by the US to counter the Germans during World War I. In 1927 residents of Saint Croix Island was granted US citizenship but are not eligible to vote in Presidential elections and do not pay tax to the US government.
The Island has 2 main towns, Christiansted and Frederiksted. The main tourist attraction in the Island is the Fort Christiansvaern which was built in the year 1749. This fort reminds the cultural history of the Island. The fort is currently restored and maintained by the National Park Services under the name Christiansted National Historic Site. 176 acres of the island and the corals reefs are preserved under the Buck Island Reef National Monument, this is a favourite spot for Snorkelers.
Due to the vast size of the Island it’s subdivided in to 9 sub districts and Christiansted and Frederiksted are the main towns among them. There are few areas in the Island which is protected by National park services such as Buck Island Reef National Monument, Christiansted National Historic Site, Green Cay National Wildlife Refuge, Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve, Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge
St. Croix generates its revenue through the tourism and tourism related industries but there are other industries also which contribute towards the revenue growth of Island’s economy such as Oil and Liquor. St.Croix is home to Hovensa, which is the largest Oil refinery and Cruzan Run Distillery.
The island has dominant Christian population; the island is home to diverse religious population. We can see Anglican, Methodist, Protestant communities.
Land activities include trekking, hiking, eco-adventure, Horse riding and cultural exploration. The island offers an island tours for the visitors to enjoy the beauty and culture of the Island. Water activities include diving, kayaking, Sports fishing, parasailing. The important water activity is the Buck Island Tours; it gives an opportunity to the visitors for a session of snorkeling.

The shopping malls and other shops are based in the two towns of Christiansted and Frederiksted. The famous places in Christiansted are Christiansted Boardwalk, Kings Alley Walk, Panam Pavilion and Frederiksted has the famous Strand Street for its shopping visitors.
St. Croix has only one airport, The Henry E. Rohlsen Airport for international services. To travel between the islands the administration offers service by commuter airlines. Visitors who love to drive can avail the car rental service which is offered in the Island; In addition to this the island offers ferry service to its commuters.
