Saint Thomas Vacation Rentals Area Information
Saint Thomas is an island located in the Caribbean Sea, which is part of Virgin Islands, US. The island is home to the capital Virgin Islands, the port of Charlotte Amalie. The city was established in 1657 by the Dutch West India Company. The primary source of income was agriculture; the Dutch divided the land in to two for plantations and Sugar Cane cultivation. The capital port Charlotte Amalie is named after the wife of Denmark’s king Christian V.In 1917 the US bought the land from the Danish dynasty, Mr. David Hamilton Jackson was instrumental behind this process. He started the first newspaper in the island known as The Herald Newspaper. He helped the workers to organize labor unions for better working conditions. In respect for Mr. Jackson the islanders hold an annual celebration to remember the legacy of Mr. Jackson.
The island was bought by the US government for the an estimated value of USD 25 million, this was part of political and military strategy to hold control over the Caribbean island and the Panama Canal which was nerve point during World War I. In 1927 residents of Saint Thomas Island was granted US citizenship.
The island is home to Synagogue of Beracha Veshalom Vegmiluth Hasidim, the oldest in United States which is currently been used by the Jewish community. The Island has many churches and Synagogues.
The Island is an example of natural beauty, the white sand beaches, and the hill is a treat for the eyes. It is home to several music and arts associations, libraries, cultural events and historical societies. It offers space for tennis courts, nature parks, and picnic areas.
Saint Thomas is a paradise for Water lovers; it has the most beautiful beaches in the world. These shops are located in Charlotte Amalie where the tourist population is concentrated due to the Cruise Ship docks. The tourists who visit the shopping area have a wide variety of products to choose from such as Jewelry, Alcohol, perfumes, clothing etc.
The island offers a wide range of restaurants for its visitors, the cuisine ranges from French, Chinese, Japanese, Italian and Mexican food. The restaurants are located in Charlotte Amalie and the French Town. The Caribbean food is very popular among the residents and tourists. The Carnival Food Fair is the most important food fair in the island, millions of people participate in this event. The night life at Saint Thomas is good and lively but cannot compare to ones in Las Vegas or New York, It offers a wide range of Pubs, Bars and clubs. The happy hours in the pubs and bars are very popular among the tourist and residents.
