Steamboat Springs Vacation Rentals Area Information

Known as “the Steamboat” or “the Boat”, Steamboat Springs is located in the upper valley of the Yampa River, just west of the Continental Divide at Rabbit Ears Pass. The town is highlighted by the Steamboat Ski Resort, on Mount Werner. The Yampa Valley and the surrounding area is dotted with several geothermal hot springs, specifically one from which the town derives its name because the spring bubbled like a steamboat.

Getting to Steamboat Springs is easy, because it is located just 40 miles off Highway 40 in the Yampa Valley. Served by two commercial airports – the Yampa Valley Airport and Denver International Airport and its own airstrip, Steamboat Springs Regional Airport, this place is easily accessible by air too, though a three hour drive, west of Denver brings you to this charming town.

Humorous names like the Steamboat Yacht Club, a by-the-river restaurant and the Old Town Hot Springs, the largest spring in the area are common. The Howelsen Ski Area is also present in the Steamboat Springs area. There are many leisure activities in this internationally known winter resort, skiing being the most popular one. World class skiing events like the 1989 and 1990 Ski World cups were held with Steamboat Springs as the locale. The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club provides training for winter sports like Alpine skiing/racing, Nordic, Snowboard and Freestyle; it has produced many Winter Olympians.

Water sports like fishing, tubing, kayaking and rafting are hosted every year at the Yampa River. The first week of June witnesses the Yampa River Festival where a wide variety of water sports are held every year, Crazy River Dog Contest, in which dogs retrieve sticks thrown into the water, being a public attraction. Hot spring resorts include the Old Town Hot Springs and the Strawberry Park Hot Springs.

Steamboat Springs has two sister cities outside the United States, as designated by Sister Cities International – Saasfee, Switzerland and San Martin de los Andes, Argentina. There are a few tourist spots just outside the town too – Yampa River Botanical Park and Fish Creek Falls. The botanical park is a splendor of greenery, open from spring to winter. Routt National Forest, home to several aspen groves and subalpine fir, shelters Fish Creek Falls, fed by small lakes in the Rabbit Ears Range of Colorado. The cascading sheet of water and the rushing sound adds tranquility to the place. Moderate temperature makes this town an even more remarkably beautiful place.
