Cape Canaveral Vacation Rentals Area Information
Florida is a state known for its beaches. It is home to the world famous Kennedy Space Center from where satellites of the United States are launched.Cape Canaveral is situated on the Atlantic Ocean and lays approximately midway between Jacksonville and Miami. It is roughly 1.9 square mile in area and surrounded by the Banana River on the west and Atlantic Ocean on the east. The visit to Cape Canaveral will be loved by both kids and adults. The name of Cape Canaveral was changed to Cape Kennedy in year 1963 after the Kennedy Space Center. Due to widespread protests from the residents, the name was changed to its original name in 1973.
Cape Canaveral is referred by some to be the Space Coast of the United States due to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and Kennedy Space Center as many of the country's space craft are launched from these two locations.
While on a visit to Cape Canaveral, if you miss Kennedy Space Center then it is said you haven't seen anything. Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex is a privately operated complex and you can see samples of moon rocks and take experience of the latest space science developments taking place in the complex, and climb onto a full size replica of space shuttle. Tours are available for visitors that showcase the spaceport facilities of NASA. In the Rocket garden, eight large rockets of the past period are on display. You need to check out the timings of the space center as these are changed periodically.
The space center lies in the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. The Wildlife Refuge was set up in 1963 and it is in 219 square miles area. It is home to more than 1000 plant species and 500 wildlife species. There are many endangered species like sea turtles, manatees and wood storks that have their home in this refuge. Many migratory birds also come here.
Canaveral National Seashore lies between the space center on south and New Smyrna Beach on north. There are around 29 miles of undeveloped barrier beaches here like Apollo Beach, Klondike Beach, Playalinda Beach. The endangered sea turtles nest here and around 300 bird species make their home in this park.
Cape Canaveral Lighthouse has been a guiding star for the ships for a long time. It has been restored and the Fresnel lens has been replaced with searchlights. It is 139 feet above sea level.
In case you are lover of deep sea fishing, then you must experience Miss Cape Canaveral at Port Canaveral. It is largest deep sea fishing boat of Florida and with the help of professional; you can manage to catch big fish like Blue Dolphin, King Mackerel and Grouper.
