St. Augustine Vacation Rentals Area Information
This scenic city lies in St. Johns County in the state of Florida. St. Augustine is longest inhabited European established city in the country. It also has the oldest port in the country. Lying in south of Amelia Island and north of Jacksonville and Palm Coast, the city has a small population of only about 12000 people.This is a tiny jewel in Florida with a romantic coastline and that rarely found old world charm. The city is famous for its historic streets, architecture and breathtaking bay area. This city was established by an explorer named Pedro Menendez de Aviles in 1565 who was from Spain.
Reaching St. Augustine is very easy as the city has its own non-commercial airport. You can reach by a private plane or if you plan to take a commercial flight then the nearest airport is the Jacksonville International Airport. You can also easily drive to this city or take the Amtrak train up until Jacksonville and hire cab to reach St. Augustine.
The climate of St. Augustine is quite humid and subtropical. Winters are generally mild. The city experience a short period of winter every year in which temperature never goes beyond freezing point.
Summers, however are harsh and long in the city. Temperature generally remains between 64 F and 91 F almost throughout the year. The city receives an average rainfall of about 50 inches and the period from June to September is the wettest in the year.
The city provides a plethora of activities and sightseeing opportunities that will interest all kinds of travelers. For animal lovers, their Alligator Farm Zoological Park where they can observe different kinds of alligators and other animals.
Castillo de San Marcos National Monument is the most famous landmark of the city. Built in 17th century by Spanish explorers, this fort was constructed to protect Spanish interests in the Florida. St. Augustine has another fort called Fort Matanzas National Monument. This is a watchtower built in 17th century on an island lying on the point of entrance to the city. You will have to take a ferry ride to reach the tower.
If you want to have some quiet time in the city, then go to Fort Mose Historic State Park which is built at the place where freed African slaves lived in America. Black slaves took asylum after freeing themselves to this area as it was under Spanish control.
Apart from these, you must also visit the Fountain of Youth, Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse, Potter's Wax Museum, San Sebastian Winery and Spanish Quarter Village while in St. Augustine.
