Fire Island Vacation Rentals Area Information
The Island is one of Long Island’s south shore. It passes through Suffolk County. It is separated from the main land by a series of interconnected bays: Great South Bay, Patchogue Bay, Bellport Bay, Narrow Bay, and Moriches Bay. The Island has very limited automobile access for day use; the island is accessible only by Ferries. Approximately 820,865 people visit Fire Island beaches each summer. Ocean Beach is one of the Fire Island largest communities, with the most bars, restaurants, shops, and people. It is unofficially the “Capital of Fire Island.”The Fire Island Inlet broke through in early 1683 separating it from Jones Beach Island. The famous structure Fire Island Lighthouse was built in 1858 right on the Inlet. The origin of Fire Island’s name is not certain; it is believed that its Native American name was “Sictem Hackey” which translates to “Land of Secatouges”. The Secatouges is a tribal group in the Bay Shore area.

The Island is protected as part of Fire Island National Seashore. Fire Island truly is blessing for the eyes because of its beautiful natural scenery, the beautiful lakes and the greenery. Fire Island’s park land includes the Fire Island National Seashore, a state park, a county park, and a couple of town parks. The Island also has 12 marinas Fair Harbor, Dunewood, Atlantique, Ocean Beach Village, Seaview, Ocean Bay Park, Cherry Grove to name a few. Fire Island also contains a number of unincorporated villages to name a few Fire Island Pines and Cherry Grove. Cherry Grove has a reputation of being the favourite destination for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) tourists.
The incorporated villages of Ocean Beach and Saltaire within Fire Island National Seashore are car-free during the summer tourist season and permit only pedestrian and bicycle traffic. A memorial for the passengers of TWA 800 is located on the eastern end at Smith Point County Park near where it was crashed.
The main tourist attraction is the Robert Moses State Park occupying the remaining western portion of the Island, is one of the popular recreational destinations in New York City area. The Fire Island Light is east of Robert Moses State Park. Another tourist attraction in the Island is Smith Point County Park; the park derives its name from Smith Point. The park is a haven for sportsmen, surfers and beach lovers. The park has white sands, rolling Atlantic surf and has a camping facility.
The Sunken Forest on Sailor’s Haven is one of the few remaining maritime forests on the eastern seaboard. It features trees that have been twisted and shaped by the constant salt spray, freshwater marshland, and abundant wildlife.
